Chamberlain University NP practicum: hours, portal, and requirements.

Chamberlain MSN nurse practitioner tracks carry 625 to 700 clinical practicum hours, compliance runs through Complio, and you secure your own preceptor. Here is exactly how the Chamberlain NP practicum works, with the placement side handled if you want it.

How many practicum hours does Chamberlain NP require?

Chamberlain delivers its nurse practitioner specializations through the online MSN, and every track ends with supervised clinical practicum hours completed at an approved facility local to you (Chamberlain, MSN Nurse Practitioner). The hour total depends on your specialization. For the most common track, the Family Nurse Practitioner, the program includes 625 clinical practicum hours plus about 25 hours of faculty-supervised lab in the advanced physical assessment course (Chamberlain, Online FNP Program).

Those 625 FNP hours are split evenly across five practicum courses of 125 hours each, so you log clinical time in distinct blocks rather than all at once. Chamberlain notes that 125 hours works out to roughly 16 hours per week across a session, scheduled around you and your preceptor.

Chamberlain MSN NP trackClinical practicum hoursStructure
Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)625 hours5 practicum courses of 125 hours, plus ~25 lab hours
Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP)625 hoursPracticum blocks plus ~25 lab hours
Psychiatric-Mental Health NP (PMHNP)625 hoursPracticum across the specialization courses
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP)700 hoursAcute-care practicum, plus two 25-hour labs (50 total)

One rule that catches some students by surprise: as of March 1, 2025, Chamberlain NP students who are residents of Kansas must complete at least 750 practicum hours in their clinical track, above the standard track total, to meet that state's requirement (NP Schools, Chamberlain University NP Programs). If you live in Kansas, plan your timeline and your number of preceptor sites around that higher floor.

Which portal does Chamberlain use for clinical compliance?

Chamberlain manages background checks, immunizations, and clinical documentation through Complio (a DISA Healthcare Technology platform) at chamberlain.complio.com. You log in with your Chamberlain credentials, complete the required forms and quizzes, and upload supporting documents such as vaccination records and TB results, all in one HIPAA-compliant system (Chamberlain, Complio portal). Chamberlain's clinical requirements page describes it as "our compliance vendor system," where students complete forms and quizzes on patient confidentiality and workplace safety (Chamberlain, Clinical Requirements).

Note that this differs from Capella, which logs practicum hours in CORE ELMS. If you are coordinating both schools or moving between them, the portal and its labels are not the same, so do not assume one set of steps carries over. The compliance items themselves, however, are similar across nursing programs.

Chamberlain clinical compliance requirements

Before you can start a practicum course you have to clear health and background screening, all tracked in Complio. Chamberlain's published requirements include the following:

  • Background check, fingerprinting, and drug screen. Required for admission and clearance; some clinical sites add FBI-level fingerprinting as a condition of placement.
  • Immunization and health records. Proof of immunity to required diseases, TB screening (two-step PPD), and a current physical exam, uploaded to Complio.
  • CPR certification. An active provider-level CPR card on file.
  • Compliance forms and quizzes. Confidentiality and workplace-safety modules completed inside the vendor system.
  • Ongoing eligibility. You work with a Clinical Coordinator and Corporate Clinical Healthcare Compliance to stay compliant for the length of your enrollment, not just at the start (Chamberlain, Clinical Requirements).

Start these early. FBI fingerprint results in particular arrive through a secure link that expires quickly, so save and upload them the moment you access the link.

Does Chamberlain find your preceptor?

No. Chamberlain's Practicum Commitment is support, not guaranteed placement. The university provides readiness tools, a streamlined contracting process between the site, preceptor, and Chamberlain, and academic support advisors, but students secure their own preceptor. Chamberlain states it plainly: "We help you find the experience, you just bring the knowledge," and it points students toward networking with peers and professors, tapping personal contacts, and even cold calling (Chamberlain, Nursing Practicum Commitment).

There is also a gate on the assistance itself: to access placement help you generally have to submit documentation of three formal site or preceptor denials and request help several sessions before your practicum starts. In other words, the search begins with you, and the school steps in after you have already tried and been turned down. That is the gap this service fills.

Who can serve as a Chamberlain NP preceptor?

Chamberlain sets specific credentials for NP preceptors, and a preceptor who does not meet them will be rejected during verification, costing you weeks. Per Chamberlain's preceptor resources, an MSN NP preceptor must (Chamberlain, Preceptor Resources):

  • Hold a master's degree or higher in nursing or a related field.
  • Maintain an active, unrestricted license in the practicum state.
  • Have at least one year of advanced practice experience.
  • Be an APRN, MD, DO, or PA, as permitted by the state board.
  • Not be a personal friend, relative, or your workplace supervisor.

The last point matters: a coworker who supervises you cannot precept you, which rules out the most convenient option for many working nurses and is a common reason placements fall through.

How the Chamberlain NP practicum runs, start to finish

The shape of the process is consistent across tracks. Knowing the sequence helps you avoid the delays that push a practicum into the next session.

StageWhat happens
1. Clear complianceBackground check, drug screen, immunizations, and forms completed and approved in Complio.
2. Secure a preceptor and siteYou identify a qualified preceptor (see credentials above) and a clinical site that will host you.
3. ContractingChamberlain executes the affiliation agreement between the site, the preceptor, and the university before clinical hours begin.
4. Log practicum hoursYou complete 125-hour blocks (700-hour total for AGACNP), with preceptor sign-off and an hour summary letter at the close of each session.
5. Campus intensivesSkills immersion before practicum and a board-exam review near the end, held in the Chicago area.

The two slowest stages are almost always finding a preceptor and getting the site contract executed in time. Both are exactly where a placement service earns its keep, because the clinical hours cannot start until the agreement is signed.

FAQ

How many clinical hours does the Chamberlain FNP require?

The MSN-FNP includes 625 clinical practicum hours, split into five practicum courses of 125 hours each, plus about 25 hours of faculty-supervised lab. Kansas residents must complete at least 750 hours in their track as of March 1, 2025.

What portal does Chamberlain use for clinical compliance?

Chamberlain uses Complio (a DISA Healthcare Technology platform) at chamberlain.complio.com for background checks, immunizations, drug screening, and compliance forms. This is different from Capella, which logs hours in CORE ELMS.

Does Chamberlain find a preceptor for you?

No. The Practicum Commitment provides readiness tools, contracting support, and advisors, but students secure their own preceptor. Assistance typically requires documentation of three formal denials first.

Who qualifies as a Chamberlain NP preceptor?

An APRN, MD, DO, or PA with a master's or higher, an active unrestricted license in the practicum state, and at least one year of advanced practice experience. They cannot be a friend, relative, or your workplace supervisor.

Do you really place Chamberlain students?

Yes. Capella is our primary focus, but the practicum wall is the same at Chamberlain, and we place Chamberlain NP students nationwide with verified, credential-matched preceptors, in person or virtual.
