How many practicum hours the Capella FNP requires

The Capella MSN Family Nurse Practitioner specialization requires a minimum of 750 practicum hours. Those hours are not done in one block. They are spread across six clinical practicum courses, and each one carries 125 practicum hours (Capella, MSN-FNP courses). You complete the practicum in your own local community while the coursework stays online (Capella, MSN-NP program).

Because the hours are tied to specific courses, you cannot bank a large number early and coast later. Each practicum course has its own hour requirement that you log and have approved before that course closes, which is why securing a preceptor who can commit across the whole sequence matters more for FNP than for shorter tracks.

FNP practicum course codes and hours

Capella delivers the FNP in two formats. GuidedPath uses NURS#### codes on 10-week quarters with letter grades; FlexPath uses the matching NURS-FPX#### codes, is self-paced, and bills a flat rate per 12-week billing session (Capella, Compare learning formats). The practicum course numbers and the 125-hour requirement are the same in both.

FlexPath learners will see the same sequence as NURS-FPX6207, NURS-FPX6302, and so on. Always confirm the exact codes on your own program map, because Capella periodically revises course numbering and your enrollment date governs which version you follow.

Patient populations the FNP covers

The FNP is a family, primary care role, so your 750 hours must span the lifespan rather than a single age group. The course sequence makes the expected mix explicit: adult and older-adult primary care, pediatrics, and reproductive or women's health (Capella, MSN-FNP courses). A preceptor whose panel is heavily skewed to one population can leave you short on another, so plan the spread before you start.

• Adult-gerontology primary care. Two practicum courses focus here: chronic disease management, acute presentations, preventive care, and the older-adult population.
• Pediatric primary care. Family-centered well-child and acute pediatric care, including growth, development, and immunization visits.
• Reproductive and women's health. Prenatal and postpartum care, contraception, and routine gynecologic primary care.
• Transition to practice. A final practicum that consolidates full-scope family care before graduation.

Approved FNP clinical settings

FNP hours are earned in outpatient, primary care settings under a qualified preceptor (a physician, NP, or in some courses a clinician matched to the population). The settings below line up with the populations above. A single family medicine clinic can sometimes cover most of the lifespan, but many students rotate across two or three sites to hit pediatrics and women's health.

Inpatient and specialty-only rotations are generally a poor fit because the FNP is a primary care credential. Confirm any nonstandard site with your faculty before you commit hours to it.

Who is responsible for finding the preceptor

This is the part that surprises most FNP students. Capella does not assign you a preceptor or a site. The university states plainly that "learners are responsible for finding an appropriate preceptor to oversee the practicum experience," and that practicum is recommended in your local community (Capella, DNP courses; Capella, MSN-NP program). Capella offers support resources, but securing the actual placement is on you, and for a 750-hour, multi-population track that means lining up coverage well in advance.

Requirements before FNP practicum starts

Once you identify a preceptor and site, there is a clearance workflow to clear before you can log a single hour. Capella manages practicum application, site and preceptor approval, hour tracking, and evaluations through its practicum management system, which we track in our workflow as Willis (CORE ELMS) (Capella, CORE ELMS). A signed affiliation agreement between Capella and the clinical site is part of that clearance (Capella, MSN-NP program).

• Propose the site and preceptor in Willis (CORE ELMS) so the placement can be reviewed and approved.
• Execute an affiliation agreement between Capella and the site before practicum begins.
• Clear compliance through a third-party background-check and health-records vendor (such as CastleBranch); confirm the current vendor with your program.
• Log and submit hours in Willis (CORE ELMS), where your preceptor approves the hours you record.

How to plan 750 hours that actually count

The students who finish on time treat placement as a logistics problem, not a paperwork one. A practical sequence:
