How many practicum hours does Capella PMHNP require?

The Capella MSN Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialization requires a minimum of 750 practicum hours, completed across five practicum courses (Capella, MSN-PMHNP courses). Each practicum course carries 150 clinical hours in a psychiatric setting, supervised by a qualified preceptor. The program is delivered online, and you complete your supervised hours in your own community at an approved site (Capella, MSN-NP program).

PMHNP is a lifespan specialty: graduates care for "individuals across the lifespan to promote mental and emotional health," which is why the practicum sequence deliberately spreads your hours across adult, older-adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry (Capella, MSN-PMHNP overview).

The five PMHNP practicum courses

The 750 hours are split evenly, 150 hours each, across Practicum I through V. Each course pairs supervised clinical hours with case presentations and discussion, and the population focus shifts as you advance.

Across all five, your hours are completed at a professional site under the supervision of an experienced clinician, typically a board-certified PMHNP or a psychiatrist (Capella, MSN-PMHNP courses). Because the lifespan requirement is split between adult/older-adult and child/adolescent rotations, many students need more than one preceptor or site over the sequence. Plan for that early.

What counts as an approved psychiatric setting

PMHNP hours must be earned in behavioral and mental-health practice, not general primary care. Settings that typically qualify, when staffed by an appropriately credentialed supervising provider:

• Outpatient psychiatry and community mental-health clinics
• Inpatient psychiatric units and behavioral-health hospitals
• Child and adolescent psychiatry practices (needed for the Practicum II population)
• Substance-use and addiction treatment programs
• Telepsychiatry practices, which Capella names directly in the Practicum III experience

The supervising provider must hold an active license and the scope to oversee psychiatric care (a PMHNP-BC, psychiatrist, or equivalent). Your site and preceptor are proposed and approved before you can start logging hours, so the credential and the setting both have to clear review first.

A note on telehealth and telepsychiatry

PMHNP is one of the more telehealth-friendly nursing specialties because much of psychiatric care, intake interviews, medication management, and psychotherapy, is delivered by video in real practice. Capella's own Practicum III description lists telepsychiatry as part of the advanced clinical experience (Capella, MSN-PMHNP courses). That does not mean the whole program is remote. The amount of telehealth that counts toward your hours depends on your specific course requirements, your preceptor's practice, and your state's rules for supervised clinical training. Confirm the current telehealth allowance for each practicum against your course instructions before assuming hours can be done entirely online.

Does Capella find your PMHNP preceptor?

No. Capella's NP programs say a "dedicated Capella support team helps connect you with practicum site opportunities," and those sites "may include your current healthcare employer or other approved" organizations (Capella, MSN-PMHNP overview). That is support, not placement. Across Capella's nursing programs the responsibility for securing the preceptor and site rests with the student; for the DNP the university states plainly that "learners are responsible for finding an appropriate preceptor to oversee the practicum experience" (Capella, DNP courses). For PMHNP that means you, not the university, line up the psychiatric site and the supervising provider for all 750 hours.

How PMHNP hours are documented and logged

Capella manages practicum applications, requirements, and the clinical hours log through CORE ELMS, its online practicum-management system (Capella, CORE ELMS). The workflow is consistent across nursing practicums:

• Propose your site and preceptor in CORE ELMS for review before the practicum starts.
• Clear compliance. A background check, drug screen, and health/immunization records are handled through a third-party compliance vendor (such as CastleBranch) before you are cleared.
• A signed affiliation agreement between Capella and your psychiatric site must be in place before practicum begins (sample executed Capella affiliation agreement).
• Log hours as you go, and have your preceptor approve them in the system. Each of the five courses must reach its 150-hour total.

A realistic PMHNP placement timeline

• Start early. Behavioral-health preceptors are in high demand and an affiliation agreement can take weeks to execute. Begin lining up your site well before the practicum quarter.
• Cover both ends of the lifespan. Confirm one source for adult/older-adult hours and a separate option for child/adolescent hours, since one practice rarely covers both well.
• Verify the credential. Make sure your preceptor's license and scope satisfy Capella's psychiatric supervision requirement before you submit the proposal.
• Front-load compliance. Complete the background check and health records before your start date so a paperwork gap does not delay logging.
