Out-of-State Rotations for Capella Students

Yes, you can complete Capella clinical hours in a state other than the one you live in. The rotation runs under the rules of the state where the patients are: your preceptor must be licensed there, your RN license must cover practice there, and the site still goes through Capella's normal approval workflow.

Can you complete Capella clinical hours in another state?

Yes. Capella delivers coursework online and expects the practicum to happen at an approved clinical site, and nothing restricts that site to your home state. Students rotate out of state for travel-nurse contracts, family moves mid-program, or simply because the nearest willing preceptor sits across a state line. We place Capella students in all 50 states, in person or virtual.

What changes is the rulebook. Licensure, scope of practice, and board paperwork all follow the state where the patients are, not the state on your mailing address, so an out-of-state rotation is mostly a licensing and timing exercise layered on top of the normal placement process.

How does a compact license work for an out-of-state rotation?

The Nurse Licensure Compact lets an RN hold one multistate license, issued by the primary state of residence, and practice in every other compact member state without applying for a second license. As an NP student you are practicing as a student on your RN license, so the compact is usually what decides whether you can walk into an out-of-state clinic on day one. Most states participate, but not all, so check the current member map at nursecompact.com before you plan anything.

Two cautions. First, a multistate license only exists if your primary state of residence is a compact member; if you hold a single-state license, or the rotation state is not a member, you will need licensure by endorsement from the rotation state's board, and boards measure that process in weeks, not days. Second, the compact covers RN practice. A separate APRN Compact exists but is not yet broadly in effect, which does not affect you as a student, though it will matter once you graduate and want multistate NP practice.

Does your preceptor need a license in the rotation state?

Yes. Clinical care happens where the patient is, so the preceptor supervising your hours must hold an active, unencumbered license in the state where the rotation takes place. A preceptor licensed only in your home state cannot supervise hours you earn somewhere else, no matter how strong the relationship is. Capella's baseline preceptor standards, an active unrestricted license plus board certification, apply on top, our preceptor qualifications guide covers them in detail.

State practice environment matters too. Full, reduced, and restricted practice states put different supervision and collaboration paperwork behind your preceptor, which can affect what your rotation looks like day to day. The AANP state practice map is the quick reference, and each of our state pages below covers the local picture.

What approval steps does Capella require for an out-of-state site?

The workflow is the same one every Capella site goes through, run for the rotation state. Nothing about crossing a state line removes a step; it only adds licensing lead time.

  • 1. Nominate the site and preceptor in CORE ELMS. The proposal identifies the out-of-state organization and the preceptor who will supervise you there.
  • 2. Execute the affiliation agreement. Capella and the organization sign before hours count; a brand-new agreement is usually the slowest single step, the same rule covered in our agreement guide.
  • 3. Clear compliance for the new site. Background check, immunizations, and any site-specific onboarding run through the standard checklist.
  • 4. Confirm state-side requirements. Some state boards add paperwork for students of out-of-state programs, and program authorization can vary by state, so verify both points with your faculty advisor before you commit to travel or housing.

Do telehealth hours across state lines count?

Telehealth follows the same location rule: the license that matters is the one covering the state where the patient sits during the visit. A telehealth rotation with a preceptor and patient panel in another state is workable when that preceptor is licensed in the patients' state and the site is approved. Precepted, hands-on telehealth counts like in-person time, but NP tracks still require a mix of in-person encounters, so an out-of-state plan cannot be telehealth-only, our virtual preceptorship guide walks through the limits.

How do you plan an out-of-state rotation without losing a term?

Sequence the licensing before the placement. Every failed out-of-state plan we see failed on timing, not on eligibility.

  • Verify license coverage first. Confirm compact status on both ends, or start endorsement with the rotation state's board before anything else.
  • Nominate early in CORE ELMS. File the site and preceptor proposal as early as your program allows, agreements move at the speed of two legal departments.
  • Anchor the schedule to clinic days. Book housing and work commitments around the preceptor's availability, not the other way round.
  • Keep a home-state backup. If the agreement stalls, a local preceptor keeps the course on schedule, and we can hold both options open.

Where do you find an FNP or PMHNP preceptor in your rotation state?

Pick the rotation state below. Every state page covers local practice authority, the clinical settings that work for the track, and how placement runs there, whether you live in the state or are rotating in for a term.

FAQ

Can I complete my Capella practicum in a different state than where I live?

Yes. The site must be approved through CORE ELMS with an affiliation agreement like any other site, your RN license must cover practice in the rotation state, and your preceptor must be licensed there. Nothing in the model ties the practicum to your home state.

Does a compact license cover practicum hours in another state?

If you hold a multistate RN license issued by your primary state of residence and the rotation state is a Nurse Licensure Compact member, yes, you can practice as a student there without a second license. Check the current member map at nursecompact.com, and budget time for licensure by endorsement if either side of that test fails.

Can my home-state preceptor supervise hours I complete in another state?

No. The preceptor supervising your hours must hold an active license in the state where the patients are seen. That is also why telehealth rotations key off the patient's state, not the preceptor's mailing address.

Do telehealth practicum hours count from a different state?

Yes, when the encounter is precepted, you deliver care, and the preceptor is licensed in the state where the patient is located. NP tracks still require a mix of in-person and telehealth encounters, so a rotation cannot be telehealth-only.

What does Capella need to approve an out-of-state site?

The same package as any site: the CORE ELMS site and preceptor nomination, an affiliation agreement between Capella and the organization, and your compliance clearances. Start early, because a brand-new affiliation agreement is usually the slowest step.
